When One Decision Opens Your Eyes

There are moments in life that feel small when they begin…

An email.
A scroll.
A message forwarded without much thought.

And then there are moments that quietly change everything.

The Moment We Couldn’t Look Away

Social media can be a powerful tool.

But if we’re honest… it can also make us numb.

We scroll past things that don’t directly touch our lives. We compartmentalize. We stay focused on what’s in front of us.

“This isn’t in my world.”

Until suddenly… it is.

On March 29th, my husband forwarded me a message from NextDoor.
It was a cry for help—from a networker working with at-risk animals in California.

A German Shepherd.

Listed as a stray.
Scheduled to be euthanized within days.

I don’t think either of us realized in that moment… how much our lives were about to shift.

What We Don’t See Behind Shelter Doors

We began asking questions.

Carefully. Intentionally. Making sure this was real.

And what we uncovered… was sobering.

Shelters are overwhelmed.

Not slightly full. Not “busy.”
They are beyond capacity.

Staff members are doing everything they can—but the reality is harsh:

There is a limited window.
Roughly 14 days.

If an animal is not adopted, placed, or pulled by rescue volunteers…
a decision is made.

And it’s one no one wants to make.

A Familiar, Painful Understanding

This wasn’t entirely foreign to me.

My stepfather was a veterinarian.

I remember the quiet heaviness that would settle in on certain evenings…
when animals were brought in after hours.

It was never openly discussed at the dinner table—but we understood.

There were parts of the clinic we weren’t allowed to go.

Even as a child, I knew…
some jobs carry a weight that never really leaves you.

So when I think about these shelters now—filled with animals simply waiting to be loved…

I don’t just see numbers.

I see faces.

I see stories.

The Race Against Time

March 30th.

We began the adoption process.

It was thorough.
As it should be.

Forms. Screening. Questions designed to ensure a lifelong match.

Meanwhile… the clock was ticking.

We passed the first stage.

Now came the hardest part—finding someone who could physically get to the shelter and pull him before it was too late.

That waiting…

It sits in your chest.

You check your phone more than you’d like to admit.
You hold your breath between messages.

And then—

A photo.

He was safe.

His First Step Toward Home

Our rescue representative sent us confirmation.

He had been pulled.
Transported to a veterinarian.

Evaluated.

He had kennel cough—treatable, but contagious.
So he needed to stay and recover before traveling.

Even in that moment, there was relief.

Not because everything was perfect.

But because he had a chance.

Preparing for Someone We Haven’t Met Yet

Something shifts when you know they’re coming.

You begin to prepare… not just your home—but your heart.

A bed.
A crate.
Food and bowls.
A leash.
A harness.
Toys that will soon be scattered across the floor.

We contacted our veterinarian.
Looked into insurance.
Read everything we could about German Shepherds.

Did you know there are five distinct lines?

  • Western Working
  • East German (DDR)
  • Czech Line
  • Western Show Line
  • American Show Line

Each with its own temperament, strengths, and story.

And somehow… this one found his way to us.

Love, Loss, and Timing

Those who know me… know I love this breed.

They also know we lost our Black Lab, Leia, on February 1st, 2025.

That loss…

It stayed with me deeper than I expected.

She wasn’t just a dog.
She was a presence. A companion. A rhythm in my everyday life.

I told myself—if we ever brought another dog into our lives…

It couldn’t be to fill a void.

It had to be right.

It had to mean something.

And this?

This doesn’t feel like replacement.

It feels like purpose.

The Journey to Meet Sherlock

We’ve named him already.

Sherlock Holmes Dusek.

Because somehow… it fits.

The curiosity.
The intelligence.
The feeling that there’s more to his story than we know.

We’ll be traveling to meet him.

The transport only runs along the I-5 corridor, so we’re making plans to stay nearby—to give him time, space, and calm as we meet for the first time.

Not rushed.

Not chaotic.

Intentional.

Why This Matters More Than Just One Dog

This is bigger than Sherlock.

This experience opened our eyes to something we had only glanced at before.

The shelter system is overwhelmed.
Volunteers are stretched thin.
And there are countless animals—just like him—waiting.

Waiting for someone to see them.

Waiting for someone to say yes.

Come Walk This Journey With Us

Lifestylio has always been about intentional living.

About slowing down enough to notice what truly matters.

And sometimes…

What matters finds you.

We’ll be sharing this journey—every step of it.

The pickup.
The first moments.
The adjustment.
The joy… and the learning curve that comes with it.

Follow along.

Because this isn’t just about bringing a dog home.

It’s about choosing to see something we once scrolled past…
and deciding to step into it fully.

April 4th
Our plan is to bring him home on April 11th.

And something tells me…

This is only the beginning.
