Lifestylio Culinary Story Spotlight
Author: Laura Dusek Lifestylio Founder
There are certain dishes in life that immediately tell you whether a restaurant understands comfort, tradition, and flavor. For me, lasagna is one of them. It is not simply pasta layered with cheese and sauce. A truly exceptional lasagna tells a story. It speaks of patience, family recipes, simmering tomato sauce, bubbling mozzarella, and kitchens filled with conversation.
During my travels, I found myself craving something familiar. Something comforting. Somewhere that reminded me of home without actually going home. That search led me to Casa Mia Italian Restaurant.
A Pacific Northwest Italian Legacy

What many people may not realize is that Casa Mia carries a long-standing history deeply rooted in Washington State tradition. Founded in 1952 in Hoquiam, Washington, Casa Mia became a beloved destination for generations of families seeking authentic Italian cuisine in the Pacific Northwest.
For me personally, Casa Mia represents nostalgia wrapped in red sauce and mozzarella cheese. Aberdeen and Hoquiam were connected through family memories, celebrations, laughter, and those unmistakable restaurant booths where stories seemed to last longer than the meal itself.
Founder Phil Bellafatto, an Italian-American originally from New York’s Little Italy neighborhood, brought authentic Italian flavors west after serving at Fort Lewis. During a time when many Americans associated Italian food with canned pasta products, Casa Mia introduced diners to brick-fired pizza, homemade tomato sauce, hand-crafted pasta dishes, and true Italian hospitality.
That attention to detail matters.
You can taste the difference between food that is assembled and food that is created with heritage behind it. Casa Mia understands that difference.
Over the decades, Casa Mia earned national recognition, including top honors in the Pizza Across America competition along with multiple awards from Pizza Today Magazine’s Pizza Festiva. Yet despite the growth and acclaim, the heart of the restaurant still feels deeply personal and family-centered.
The Lifestylio Culinary Experience
Walking into Casa Mia immediately feels welcoming in a way many modern restaurants struggle to recreate.
The walls are lined with photographs and memories. Italian flags hang proudly overhead. Music, laughter, clinking glasses, and the unmistakable movement of pizza dough being tossed in the kitchen create an atmosphere that feels alive rather than manufactured.
This is not sterile dining.
This is gathering.
This is family.
This is the kind of restaurant where people linger at the table because the experience matters just as much as the food itself.
At the table beside me sat a group of elegant women celebrating something special. I never interrupted to ask the occasion because honestly, it did not matter. The joy spoke for itself. Watching them laugh together felt like watching a living scrapbook unfold page by page. Friendship. History. Memories. Shared meals.
That moment alone embodied what dining out should still be about.
The Famous Casa Mia Salad
Sometimes the simplest dishes become the most memorable.
Casa Mia’s traditional salad may appear uncomplicated at first glance — crisp head lettuce, generous piles of mozzarella cheese, black olives, and your choice of dressing — yet somehow it becomes far greater than the sum of its ingredients.
Even former employees reportedly admit they cannot fully recreate it at home.
Every bite feels intentional. Fresh. Balanced. Familiar.
In a culinary world constantly trying to reinvent itself, there is something incredibly refreshing about a restaurant confidently serving dishes exactly the way people remember them.
Appetizer Perfection
To begin the evening, I ordered the Cheesy Garlic Bread with dipping sauce.
The real question becomes: red sauce or white sauce?
My answer? Why choose?
Both sauces deserve your attention because each offers a completely different flavor experience. The red sauce delivers rich tomato warmth and comforting Italian seasoning, while the white sauce brings creamy indulgence that pairs beautifully with the crisp edges of the garlic bread.
Golden, buttery, bubbling with cheese, and impossible to stop eating.
Exactly as garlic bread should be.
Chianti & Lasagna – The Ultimate Pairing
For the beverage, I selected a glass of Chianti wine.
Perfecto.
Smooth, balanced, and ideal alongside hearty Italian comfort food.
Then came the true test.
Lasagna.
Wide noodles layered with ground beef, sausage, cottage cheese, cream cheese, spaghetti sauce, and topped with bubbling mozzarella cheese fresh from the oven.
This was not a tiny artistic square placed delicately in the center of a plate.
This was real lasagna.
The kind that arrives steaming hot with cheese stretching from fork to plate. The kind that instantly slows conversation because everyone at the table becomes focused on that very first bite.
Rich without becoming overwhelming. Flavorful without unnecessary complication. Comforting without apology.
For someone who deeply associates Italian cooking with memory, family, and authenticity, Casa Mia delivered exactly what I hoped it would.
More Than a Restaurant
Casa Mia is not attempting to be trendy.
It is not chasing culinary gimmicks or social media fads.
Instead, it succeeds at something far more meaningful: consistency, atmosphere, warmth, and tradition.
In today’s world, that alone feels rare.
Whether you are celebrating a birthday, reconnecting with old friends, sharing dinner with family, or simply craving authentic Italian comfort food, Casa Mia offers an experience that feels grounded in hospitality.
And perhaps that is why generations continue returning.
Some restaurants feed you.
Others become part of your story.
Casa Mia has clearly become part of many.
